I’m currently on the lookout for purchasing my first motocross bike and think I could do with a bit of help. Like any big purchase you make, there are many things to consider and I thought it might be best to get some expert advice on what else to look out for. I’m still very much a beginner but have really been putting in the hours at practice lately and have decided that getting my very own bike would be the cheapest and more logical option. For now my main focus is on size, power and budget. Is there anything else I should keep in mind?

In terms of size I know that bigger isn’t always better as this can make it hard for you to control the bike. Same goes for a smaller model which can be really uncomfortable and dangerous (a lesson I learned in my second ever attempt on the tracks). The power of a bike is similar – too much power can be hard to control but, as is the case for me, I will probably want something more powerful in a matter of months. What would be best to do – buy to suit my current needs or think in the long run? There’s also the choice between a 2 or 4 stroke, what would you suggest is best?

In terms of pricing what do you think is a good budget to have initially and also what brands are best when looking at the kind of motocross bikes for sale? I’ve been looking at models from Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda and have one or two in mind that I might investigate a bit further. Looking through the various websites of these brands can be slightly daunting though and it’s easy to be taken in by the smartest looking dirt bikes for sale with the highest specs. Like I said, my knowledge is still a work-in-progress so any advice would be great!
